NHL Birth Province Breakdown

Ontario has produced the most Canadian NHL players in every season throughout NHL history. In early years, Ontarians accounted for up to 75% of Canadian born players, but since the 1940s their share has hovered between 35 and 50 percent.

Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia each produce currently over 10% of the Canadian NHL players, while the share of players born in Saskatchewan and Manitoba is less than 10 percent.

The chart below shows the relative proportions of different birth provinces in the NHL starting from the 1917-1918 season. Season specific data used in the chart can be found on the province totals statistics pages.
